Maha Shivaratri Festival

Maha Shivaratri, falling in February or March depending on the lunar calendar, transforms Vemulawada into one of the largest Shaivite gatherings in south India. Between three and four lakh (300,000–400,000) devotees arrive over the course of the festival, many travelling through the night from across Telangana and neighbouring states.

The centrepiece is the Ekadasa Rudrabhishekham performed at midnight — a major ritual in which eleven priests conduct the abhishekam together, offering sacred substances to the deity in an extended ceremony that draws enormous crowds into the temple precincts. The temple complex is illuminated throughout the night, and poojas continue from dusk until dawn. Cultural performances, processions, and community feeding also mark the days around Shivaratri.

If you want to witness one of the biggest pilgrimage gatherings in the region, this is the time to come. Be prepared for very large crowds, limited accommodation, and roads blocked for significant stretches. Arriving the day before and leaving the day after gives you the best of the festival without the worst of the congestion.
