Padri Ki Haveli

The oldest church in Bihar, built in 1772, where Mother Teresa took her novitiate training

The Padri Ki Haveli -- "the priest's mansion" -- is Bihar's oldest church, built in 1772 by Father Joseph Cantona on land bought from a Mughal nobleman. The first chapel on the site dated from 1713 and was destroyed when the Maratha army sacked the city in 1761. The present church is in a peculiar Indo-Italian style: arches, a high facade, and an interior with sober wooden pews.

Mother Teresa spent part of her novitiate training at the convent attached to the church in 1948 before founding the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta. The church is in the Patna City area, near the Sikh shrine and Agam Kuan. Mass is still held on Sundays.
