Takht Sri Patna Sahib

One of the five Takhts of Sikhism, marking the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh

In the eastern part of Patna -- the area still called Patna City, which was the original walled town -- the white domes and gilded finials of Takht Sri Patna Sahib mark one of the five Takhts of Sikhism, the seats of supreme religious authority. The shrine is at its busiest during Prakash Utsav, the celebration of Guru Gobind Singh's birth, when pilgrims arrive from across India and the Sikh diaspora.

Visitors of all faiths are welcome. You will need to cover your head, leave your shoes at the entrance, and pass through a brief security check. The langar (community kitchen) serves free meals to all comers throughout the day. Photography is restricted in the inner sanctum.

A story
Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth and last human Sikh Guru, was born here in 1666. The site preserves several of his personal relics, including a small pair of sandals, an iron arrowhead, and a sword. The current marble gurdwara was built on the orders of Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab in the early nineteenth century, replacing an earlier shrine.
