Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary

Coastal wetland sanctuary with over 300 bird species

About 10 km east of Jamnagar, the Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary protects an unusual habitat: a mosaic of freshwater wetlands, salt-pans, mangroves, and creeks where the Ruparel and Kalindri rivers meet the Gulf of Kutch. The mix of fresh and salt water draws large numbers of birds, particularly between October and March when migratory species pass through.

More than 300 species have been recorded: flamingos, pelicans, painted storks, ibises, and a long list of waders. Trails and watchtowers run through the sanctuary and a guide can be hired at the entrance. Bring water and binoculars; there is no shop. Early morning is the best time.
