Marine National Park

India's first marine national park, with coral reefs at low tide

The Gulf of Kutch Marine National Park stretches along the coast west of Jamnagar and across to a string of small islands. The reef itself is the attraction: at low tide, the receding water leaves shallow pools and exposed coral that you can walk across, with stretches of brain coral, soft coral, sea anemones, octopus, and small reef fish.

Pirotan Island, accessible by boat from the village of Bedi, is the most-visited area; permits are required and arranged through the forest department. The tide times govern everything — go early at the spring low tides for the best exposure. A guide is strongly recommended; the reef is fragile and there are sharper hazards to watch for.

A story
The Marine National Park was India's first protected marine area, declared in 1980. At spring low tides the reef flats are exposed for several kilometres, and you can walk out among living coral, sea urchins, octopus in the rockpools, and clumps of bright sponges — an experience available almost nowhere else in India.
