Ki

Hilltop monastery cluster in Spiti, centred on Key Gompa above the Spiti River.

Ki is best understood as the monastery stop above the Spiti River, not as a normal village destination. Key Monastery rises in stacked white blocks from a bare hill north of Kaza, with brown mountains behind it and the valley floor far below.

The monastery is one of Spiti's great anchors: a Gelugpa Buddhist house, a training centre for monks, and a place where the architecture feels shaped by the same hard landscape around it. The visit is short, but the setting is powerful enough to justify the detour.

Most travelers fold Ki into a day around Kaza, Kibber, and Chicham. That works well. The road climbs quickly from the river to high villages, empty slopes, and views that make Spiti feel less like a valley than a world above the rest of India.
