Chinta Valley

Chinta Valley lies about 20 kilometres northeast of Bhadarwah on the Bhadarwah-Jai road, tucked into the lower Himalayan ranges at around 2,200 metres. The valley is broad and grassy, ringed by forested ridges, and the air in summer has the particular clarity that comes at altitude — cool, clean, and smelling of pine resin and wild flowers.

The drive up is itself worth making: the road passes through old-growth deodar stands and opens periodically onto views across the Bhadarwah valley far below. Once in the valley, you can walk for hours without crossing another tourist. The surrounding meadows are good for birdwatching and the forested slopes above are home to leopard, black bear, and monal pheasant — though you'd be lucky to see any of them in daylight.

A story
Chinta Valley is sometimes called the "valley within a valley" — a high-altitude pocket enclosed on three sides by ridges, accessed by a road that climbs through dense deodar forest. The village at its heart still practices transhumance, moving cattle to higher pastures in summer exactly as generations before them have done.
