Things to Do

Bhadarwah's main attractions are its natural landscapes and old religious sites.

The historic temples include Gupt Ganga, Vasuki Nag, Bhadrakali, Laxminarayan, and Durga Devi — all within or near the town. Bhadarwah Fort and the walk through Parla Bazar give a good sense of the old town.

The countryside around the town offers alpine meadows (Jai and Chinta are the main ones), the huge open pastures of Padri Pass on the Chamba road, Ashapati Glacier, and the natural springs and rivers that characterise the valley. Traditional step farming using bullocks is still practiced in the villages of Sertingal, Nalthi, and Paneja — worth visiting to see agricultural methods that have changed little in centuries.

The trek to Mount Kailash (5,029 m) is doable in August; it requires no technical skills and horses and porters are available locally. The trek follows traditional pilgrimage routes and the views at the top are exceptional.

Local culture is distinct from the Kashmir Valley: Bhadarwah has its own folk music traditions including bagpiper bands (an unusual Himalayan instrument combination) and distinctive dances at festivals and weddings.
