Mahanavami Dibba is one of the strongest stops in Hampi's Royal Enclosure, a high ceremonial platform from which Vijayanagara rulers watched processions and court rituals. Its scale is impressive from a distance, but the carved bands of horses, soldiers, dancers, and animals are what make it linger.
Climb slowly and look back across the enclosure, because the platform was built for theatre as much as for height. It is especially good early or late in the day, when the reliefs are easier to read and the stone is less punishing underfoot.
