Matanga Hill

The highest point in central Hampi, Matanga Hill rises above the ruins and offers a 360-degree view across the entire site — the Tungabhadra River to the north, the royal enclosure and Lotus Mahal to the south, and the Vittala Temple cluster to the northeast. The climb takes about 20 minutes from the Virupaksha Temple side and is steep in places, but there is a good path.

At the summit, a small Shiva temple marks the top. Sunrise is the classic time to make the climb: watching the first light hit the boulder field and the river is one of the best moments Hampi offers. In the evening, the setting sun illuminates the western faces of the columns and gopurams across the site. Come in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat.

A story
According to the Ramayana, Matanga Hill is where the monkey god Sugriva hid the jewels dropped by Sita as she was carried away by Ravana — Hampi is identified in Hindu tradition with Kishkindha, the kingdom of the monkey army that helped Rama rescue her. The giant boulders that cover the hill, already strange and dramatic, take on an extra quality once you know this.
