Royal Enclosure

Ceremonial and administrative core of Vijayanagara, with platforms, baths, and palace foundations.

The Royal Enclosure was the ceremonial and administrative heart of Vijayanagara, the imperial city now known through the ruins of Hampi. Much of what remains is foundation-level stonework, but the scale is still clear: broad platforms, stepped tanks, audience spaces, and the traces of a palace quarter built for display as much as government.

Do not rush it between the more photogenic monuments. The enclosure rewards slow walking, because its power lies in layout and proportion rather than a single surviving tower. The Mahanavami Dibba platform and the stepped tank are the anchors, and together they help explain how Hampi functioned as a capital rather than just a collection of temples.
