Kalady is a small pilgrimage town on the Periyar River, revered as the birthplace of Adi Shankara, the philosopher-saint most closely associated with Advaita Vedanta. It is close to Kochi airport, but it should not be treated only as a convenient stop: for Hindu pilgrims and anyone interested in Indian religious thought, the town has real gravity.
The main focus is the Sri Adishankara Janmabhoomi Temple, run by the Sringeri tradition near the river. Nearby, the Adi Shankara Keerthi Sthambam tells Shankara's life through an eight-storey memorial tower, while the Ramakrishna Advaita Ashrama gives the town a quieter modern monastic presence.
Kalady is not a town of grand secular sights. Its appeal is devotional, philosophical, and local: temple bells, river ghats, Malayalam-speaking lanes, and the sense of a living pilgrimage place rather than a preserved monument.
