Betwa River Chhatris

The Betwa River Chhatris are a line of Bundela memorial towers standing just south of town. Their tall domes and pavilions are dramatic at any time, but near sunset they become Orchha's defining view.

Walk down to the riverbank and look back rather than only standing beside them. The best composition is the one that puts the cenotaphs, water, and scrubby Bundelkhand landscape together.

A story
The chhatris are royal cenotaphs, not tombs in the strict burial sense. Their silhouettes beside the Betwa have become Orchha's most haunting image, especially because vultures and other birds often circle or perch around the towers.
