Orchha is the Bundelkhand ruin town that should be far more famous than it is. Set on the Betwa River just over the Madhya Pradesh border from Jhansi, it has palaces, painted temples, riverside cenotaphs, and a compact old settlement where the monuments still feel connected to everyday worship and market life.
The town was founded in the 16th century by the Bundela rulers, and its best buildings are close enough to explore without losing the sense of place. The Orchha Fort Complex holds the Jahangir Mahal and Raj Mahal. In town, the unusual Ram Raja Temple functions as both shrine and royal court, while Chaturbhuj Temple rises above the lanes like a stone ship. Across the fields, Lakshmi Narayan Temple preserves some of the finest murals in the region.
Most travellers come from Jhansi, only 17 km away, but Orchha rewards a night. The day-trippers leave, the Betwa River Chhatris catch the last light, and the town suddenly feels less like a side trip and more like the reason you came.
