Raj Mahal

Raj Mahal is older and more inward-looking than Jahangir Mahal, with a stronger emphasis on painted rooms and private court spaces. From outside it can seem almost severe, but the interiors still carry traces of the Bundela court's colour.

Look carefully at the surviving murals rather than racing to the roof. They are fragile, unevenly preserved, and far more interesting than the building first suggests.

A story
Raj Mahal's plain exterior hides rooms with delicate murals of gods, court scenes, and royal life. Orchha often works this way: severe outside, unexpectedly painted within.
