Aurangabad Caves

A group of twelve Buddhist rock-cut caves on a hill about 3 km from Bibi Ka Maqbara, carved between the 6th and 11th centuries AD. They are far less visited than Ajanta or Ellora — which means you will often have them almost to yourself — and the carvings here, especially in Cave 7, are outstanding. The cave features a central image of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara flanked by heavenly figures and sensuous female attendants (shalabhanjikas) that show the influence of the late Gupta sculptural tradition.

The caves are in two groups: the western group (Caves 1–5) and the eastern group (Caves 6–10). Only a few are fully accessible, but the walk between the groups along the hillside has good views across the Aurangabad plain. The site is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India. Entry ₹25.
