Nagpur has its own food traditions distinct from the coastal Maharashtrian cuisine of Mumbai and Pune. The city's signature dish is saoji mutton — a fiery, dark curry made with a complex blend of whole spices, cooked low and slow until the meat nearly dissolves. Saoji curry is available across the city but the best versions are found in the Mahal and Itwari areas. Tarri poha is the essential Nagpur breakfast: a bowl of flattened rice topped with a thin, spiced chickpea gravy (tarri), eaten at roadside stalls from early morning. The orange orchards around the city mean fresh juice and orange-based sweets are everywhere in winter.
Shree Krishna Bhojanalaya in the Mahal area serves excellent traditional Maharashtrian thali. For saoji specialities, the original Nagpur saoji restaurants in Itwari are the reference. The Dharampeth area has a concentration of cafes and South Indian restaurants popular with students and professionals.
