Dagdusheth Halwai Ganapati Temple

The most visited and most photographed temple in Pune. The central idol is an enormous, vividly gilded figure of Ganesh, garlanded daily with fresh flowers and surrounded by ornate silverwork. The interior is small but the energy is high -- worshippers, queues, drumming, bells -- and the temple is busiest on Tuesday and Sunday evenings.

During Ganesh Chaturthi in late August or September the area becomes the spiritual epicentre of the city, with elaborate decorations, lights, and a constant stream of devotees that goes on for ten days. At any other time you can walk in and out in twenty minutes; just leave your shoes at the entrance and dress modestly.

A story
The temple's founder, the nineteenth-century sweet-maker Dagdusheth Halwai, commissioned the original idol in 1893 after a cholera epidemic killed his son. The same year, the social reformer Tilak began organising community Ganesh celebrations in Pune to bring people together across caste lines -- the festival that now fills cities across Maharashtra was effectively born around this temple.
