Tulsi Baug

The most atmospheric of Pune's old bazaars, a tightly packed labyrinth of stalls and small shops in the heart of the old city. The lanes specialise in pooja and wedding goods -- brassware, incense, kumkum, silver jewellery, copperware from neighbouring Tambat Ali -- and the colours and smells make the place unmistakable.

In the middle of the bazaar stands the eighteenth-century Tulsibaug Ram Mandir, once the tallest structure in Pune, with a beautiful gilded shikhara. The lanes are busiest in the evening; you will need patience and good shoes. Bargaining is expected.
