All Saints' Cathedral

The Anglican cathedral on Kacheri Road, an attractive stone-and-timber building consecrated in 1902. The original 1872 church was destroyed by the great Assam earthquake of 1897 — the same quake that flattened most of colonial Shillong — and the replacement was designed to ride out future tremors, with a deliberately squat plan and heavy buttressing.

Inside, the woodwork is the highlight: dark teak beams, panelled ceilings, and memorials to the British civil servants and tea planters of upper Assam who once made up the congregation. Services are still held in English on Sundays.
