State Museum

The Captain Williamson Sangma State Museum, in the Directorate of Arts and Culture building on Lachumiere Hill, holds the state's official collection of Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo artefacts. Galleries cover traditional dress, weaponry, musical instruments, monoliths, and the matrilineal kinship system.

The displays are old-fashioned and the lighting dim, but for anyone trying to understand what makes Khasi society distinctive — particularly the inheritance of property and the clan name through the youngest daughter — it is a quick and useful primer. Closed Saturdays.
