Patiala

Former Punjabi princely capital known for Mughal-era palaces, gardens, and a relaxed old-town rhythm.

Patiala is a former princely state capital in the heart of Punjab, known for its Mughal-era palaces, sprawling gardens, and a pace of life that feels unhurried compared to the big Punjabi cities. The Maharajas of Patiala left behind an impressive architectural legacy — most notably the massive Moti Bagh Palace, now partly the National Institute of Sports, and the ornate Qila Mubarak complex in the old city centre.

The old town is worth a wander for its narrow lanes, havelis, and busy bazaars. Patiala is also the birthplace of the Patiala peg — the famously generous measure of whisky said to have been standardised by one of its Maharajas — and the Patiala salwar, the voluminous trousers that became a staple of Punjabi dress.

It is not a major tourist destination, but travellers passing through Punjab will find it a pleasant, walkable city with genuine character and excellent Punjabi food.
