Junagarh Fort is the main attraction, with its lavishly decorated palaces, courtyards, and a good museum. Unlike most Rajasthani forts, it sits on flat ground and was never conquered despite numerous sieges. The Anup Mahal throne room, with its gold leaf and lacquer work, is the highlight.
Outside the fort, the old city has some fine carved havelis (Rampuria Haveli Street is the best stretch) and the colorful Kote Gate market area. The Camel Research Farm, 8 km out of town, is unexpectedly interesting. The Karni Mata Temple at Deshnoke (30 km south) -- home to thousands of revered rats -- is one of the most unusual religious sites in India and should not be missed if you have a strong stomach.
