The old city around Mehrangarh and the clock tower market is compact enough to walk, and walking is the only way to properly explore the lanes of the Blue City. Outside the old walls, Jodhpur spreads considerably, and the distances between the railway station, the old city, and Umaid Bhawan Palace are too far and too hot for most visitors to cover on foot.
Auto-rickshaws are the main option for getting between areas. They are abundant outside the railway station, near the clock tower, and at the fort gate. Always agree on a fare before you get in, or insist firmly on the meter — it is a rare driver who will offer it unprompted. For Mandore Gardens, 9 km north of the old city, negotiate a rate that includes the driver waiting while you look around; the return journey from an unfamiliar spot can otherwise be difficult. Shared tempos (fixed-route auto-rickshaws) run along the main roads if you want the local experience and have more time than hurry.
