Kapra Bazaar

Textile market with bandhani tie-dye and lahariya fabrics

Jodhpur's textile market is the place to look for the two weaving traditions that Rajasthan does better than anywhere else. Bandhani is a tie-dye technique in which tiny dots of fabric are bound before dyeing, creating intricate geometric patterns in bright colors on silk, chiffon, or cotton. Lahariya is a diagonal wave-striped pattern — the name means "wave" — traditionally worn at the monsoon festival of Teej. Both are sold here by the meter or made up into dupattas, saris, and kurtas.

Quality ranges from mass-produced synthetic versions to fine hand-worked silk pieces at considerably higher prices. If you want the real thing, ask to see the work up close: the binding marks on good bandhani should be visible on the reverse, and the colors should be even and deep. Several shops will have cloth made to measure; allow two or three days if you want a garment stitched. The market is busiest in the late afternoon when the daytime heat eases.
