Sheroes Hangout

A short walk from the Taj East Gate, Sheroes Hangout is a small, deliberately understated cafe that doubles as a social campaign. The walls are painted with portraits of the women who run it and panels about their stories. The food is simple — chai, sandwiches, samosas, biryani at lunch — but you do not come here for the menu.

Pay what you think is fair when you finish. The work the cafe supports — through the Stop Acid Attacks campaign and the Chhaanv Foundation — is one of the more important grassroots social-justice projects in north India. Open from late morning into the evening.

A story
Sheroes Hangout is run by women who survived acid attacks. The cafe charges nothing for food and drink — you 'pay as you wish' — and the income supports legal aid, counselling, and skills training for survivors elsewhere in the country. The campaign that grew out of the cafe was instrumental in pushing for stricter regulation of acid sales in India.
