The Gorakhnath Temple is the defining landmark of Gorakhpur and one of the most important pilgrimage sites in eastern Uttar Pradesh. The temple complex honours Guru Gorakshnath, the medieval ascetic credited with founding the Nath order of yoga and popularising Hatha Yoga across the Indian subcontinent. The main shrine is large and always busy, attended by sadhus and pilgrims from across the Hindi belt.
Beyond the principal temple, the complex contains several smaller shrines, a large courtyard, and ashram buildings where yogis in residence can be observed in meditation and practice. The atmosphere is both devotional and scholarly — the Nath tradition has always placed emphasis on philosophical study as well as ascetic discipline. Non-Hindus are generally welcome to visit and observe respectfully.
