Gorakhpur Junction is one of the busiest and most important railway junctions in north India, serving as the operational headquarters of the North Eastern Railway zone. The station handles an enormous volume of traffic: express trains to Delhi, Kolkata, Varanasi, Mumbai, and dozens of other destinations leave from here daily, along with slower passenger trains threading across eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
The station is also the main gateway for travellers heading to Nepal — buses and shared vehicles to the border at Sunauli depart from just outside. Even if you are only passing through, the station's organised chaos is a genuine spectacle: chai vendors, porters in red shirts, families camped out with luggage towers, sadhus in saffron. Platform 1 is worth a stroll just for its sheer length.
