Durga Temple

Red-painted Durga shrine near Assi in Varanasi, active and atmospheric

Durga Temple, often called Durga Kund Mandir, is one of Varanasi's well-known active Hindu temples away from the riverfront ghats. Its red-painted walls and busy devotional rhythm make it visually distinct from the stone steps and lanes closer to the Ganges.

Non-Hindu visitors may find access to inner areas restricted, so come with respect and modest expectations. The temple works well with nearby Assi Ghat and the southern side of the city, where Varanasi feels less compressed than around Dashashwamedh.
