Dhirdham Temple

Dhirdham Temple sits near the Darjeeling railway station on the lower side of town, a brightly coloured Hindu temple built in the pagoda style of Nepal's Kathmandu Valley. It was constructed in 1939 as a replica of the Pashupatinath Temple, and the tiered roofs and carved wooden detail are unusual in the context of the surrounding hill station architecture.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is an active place of worship, busiest at dawn and dusk when the puja bells can be heard from the station below. The site is open to visitors outside prayer times, and the views from the temple terrace across the valley toward the station and the Batasia Loop below are worth the short walk from town.

A story
Dhirdham Temple was built in 1939 as a replica of the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, the most important Hindu shrine in Nepal, by a Nepalese patron. The choice of model reflects Darjeeling's predominantly Nepali-origin population.
