Museum Le Mayeur

Beachfront home and studio of the Belgian painter Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur

Address Jalan Hang Tuah, Sanur

The small museum on the beachfront at the northern end of Sanur is the former home of the Belgian-born painter Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merprès, who arrived in Bali in 1932 and stayed until his death in 1958. The house is a low Balinese compound of carved doorways and shaded courtyards — itself worth seeing — filled with Le Mayeur's saturated, almost dream-like paintings of Balinese women in the gardens and on the beach, most of them modelled by his wife Ni Polok, a former Legong dancer.

The hang is haphazard and the lighting is gentle, but the place feels remarkably intact: this is what a wealthy expatriate's compound looked like before the resort era arrived. Open daily except for major holidays, modest entry fee, and a useful detour from the beach walk.

A story
Le Mayeur came to Bali in 1932 at the age of 52, met the 15-year-old Legong dancer Ni Polok, and never left. They married, and Ni Polok modelled for the radiant, light-saturated paintings that fill the house. She lived on alone here for over twenty years after his death and bequeathed the house to the Indonesian state in 1985.
