Ambarawa Train Museum

Colonial-era steam locomotives with scenic mountain rides

Opening Hours 08:00-17:00

Old steam locomotives and carriages from the colonial era are on display at this station, formerly known as Koening Willem I (opened 1873). Visitors can take a nostalgic ride in wooden carriages pulled by a 1907 locomotive along the scenic Ambarawa–Bedono route through beautiful mountain landscape. The 9-kilometre line is one of the last surviving cog railways in Asia and climbs sharply through bamboo forests and tea plantations.

Steam rides require a minimum group and are best booked a day or two ahead; diesel-hauled trips run more regularly. Even without a ride the open-air collection of two dozen 19th- and early-20th-century engines is worth an hour.

A story
The Bedono line is one of the few cog railways left in operation anywhere in southeast Asia. It was built in 1905 to climb the 1-in-25 grades up the Ungaran foothills, retired from regular service in 1976, and saved for tourist use largely because nobody had the budget to dismantle the rack-and-pinion track.
