A community-run cluster of stilt restaurants and floating gazebos on the northern edge of Rawa Pening, Kampoeng Rawa is the easiest way to actually get out onto the lake. Local cooperatives manage the boats, the catfish ponds, and the kitchens, which keeps prices low and the food simple but fresh — grilled gurame and tilapia straight from the water, sambal, and rice.
Boats run short circuits across the lake, including a stop at one of the bamboo fishing platforms. A pleasant lunch-and-an-hour stop on the way between Semarang and Yogyakarta.
