Candi Sewu is a large Buddhist temple complex just north of Prambanan. Its name means "one thousand temples", though the complex has 249, with a restored central temple surrounded by smaller shrines and empty statue niches.
It is quieter than Prambanan but still substantial. Enter from the east side and give yourself time to walk the outer ruins, where the scale of the complex is easier to feel.
