Kotagede is one of Yogyakarta's most rewarding districts to wander, an old capital area where narrow lanes, carved wooden houses, mosques, markets, and silver workshops sit close together. It feels older and more lived-in than the city's broad ceremonial avenues.
The pleasure here is slow travel rather than a single monument. Look for traditional joglo houses, the old royal cemetery complex, and small craft shops, then leave time to get mildly lost in the back streets.
