Getting Around

Pontianak is spread out along the Kapuas River and getting around requires some effort. Ride-hailing apps (Grab and Gojek) are the most practical option for most journeys and are cheap by Western standards. Taxis are also available but make sure to agree a price before getting in or insist on the meter.

The small ferries (tambang) crossing the Kapuas are the traditional way to get to the palace and mosque on the south bank and are a pleasant and cheap experience. They depart from several points along the north bank near the city centre.

Ojek (motorcycle taxis) are available everywhere and faster through traffic. Renting a bicycle is possible and works well for exploring the riverside and the area around the Equator Monument, which is flat and has reasonable cycle paths.
