Pasar Flamboyan is Pontianak's main covered market, a sprawling multi-storey complex near the waterfront where the full produce of West Kalimantan arrives daily. The ground floor is fish and seafood — the variety from the Kapuas river and the South China Sea is remarkable — while the upper floors hold vegetables, spices, dried goods, and the slightly alarming range of freshwater creatures that Borneo's rivers produce.
The market is at its busiest and most photogenic between 5am and 8am when the overnight boats bring in fresh produce. By midday it quietens down and some stalls close. The area around the market has several cheap local restaurants that open at dawn for the market traders and are some of the best places in Pontianak for an early breakfast of nasi lemak or mie soup.
