West Kalimantan Provincial Museum

The West Kalimantan Provincial Museum (Museum Provinsi Kalimantan Barat) sits near Tanjungpura University on Jalan Jenderal Ahmad Yani, about 5 km south of the city centre. It is the main repository for the cultural heritage of the province and covers the full range of West Kalimantan's remarkable ethnic diversity: Dayak, Malay, Chinese, and Dutch colonial objects all under one roof.

The Dayak section is the highlight — carved wooden objects, traditional textiles, ceremonial items, and models of longhouse architecture. The Chinese section reflects the long Hakka and Teochew presence in Pontianak and gives context to the city's Chinese-Indonesian character. The Dutch colonial room is smaller but interesting for the maps and early photographs of the city and river.

The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, closed Monday. Budget two hours for a thorough visit.

A story
The museum holds one of the best collections of Dayak objects in Indonesian Borneo — blowpipes, mandau headhunting swords, carved wooden panels from longhouses, and traditional beadwork. Many of these objects come from communities deep in the Kapuas river basin where traditional practices are still maintained, making this a genuine window into a living culture rather than a purely historical collection.
