"Base G" was the code-name for the US Sixth Army base established at this beach after the April 1944 landings, and the name has stuck — there is nothing else called Base G in town. The beach itself is a curving bay of pale sand about 5 km north of the centre, with a few warungs serving grilled fish and cold drinks at weekends.
It is the most popular swimming beach for Jayapura locals — busy on Sundays, almost empty during the week. A small entrance fee is charged at the access road. The water is clean and the snorkelling off the rocks at the south end is surprisingly good.
