Tugu MacArthur

MacArthur's wartime command post on Ifar Gunung, with views over Lake Sentani

The monument sits at the top of Ifar Gunung, the hill rising above the eastern shore of Lake Sentani close to the airport. The site is on an active Indonesian army base, so you need to leave ID at the gate and pay a small entry fee, but visitors are welcome and the climb up by car or ojek takes about twenty minutes from Sentani town.

The view from the top is the reason to come: Lake Sentani spreads out below in all directions, dotted with islands and edged with stilt-house villages, and the green hills of the Cyclops Mountains rise behind. A small bunker, a flagpole, and the MacArthur memorial are all that remain. Combine it with the museum at Cenderawasih on the way back into town.

A story
From this hill in April 1944 General Douglas MacArthur watched the Allied landings at Hollandia, the operation that broke the Japanese line in northern New Guinea. The small marble monument at the top still carries the inscription "From this site General Douglas MacArthur directed the liberation of the Philippines".
