Berastagi

Cool Karo highland town below Sibayak and Sinabung volcanoes, between Medan and Lake Toba

Berastagi is a Karo highland town in North Sumatra, about two to three hours from Medan on the road toward Lake Toba. Its appeal is simple and strong: cooler air, vegetable farms, fruit markets, and two volcanoes - Sibayak and Sinabung - rising close enough to dominate the skyline.

Most travellers come to climb Mount Sibayak, a steaming volcanic crater that can be done as a half-day trip with an early start. After the hike, the hot springs at Lau Debuk Debuk are exactly what you want: rough-edged, local, and very welcome on tired legs.

Berastagi is not pretty in a tidy colonial-hill-station way. Traffic can be loud, weekend crowds from Medan are real, and the sights are scattered. Still, the town has a clear mountain identity, and for a spare day in northern Sumatra it easily beats sitting in Medan waiting for the next bus.
