Jameh Mosque of Yazd

The Friday Mosque is the centrepiece of Yazd's old city and one of the great mosques of Iran. The portal rises dramatically from the bazaar quarter, its twin minarets flanking a deeply recessed iwan faced entirely in intricate geometric tilework in blues and teals. The effect is dazzling even by Persian standards.

Inside, the sanctuary chamber is crowned by a squat dome decorated with tile mosaic, beneath which an extraordinary faience mihrab from 1365 survives intact — one of the finest of its type in the Islamic world. The courtyard is peaceful and spacious, and the views from the arcade back toward the portal are among the best in the city. Non-Muslims are welcome outside prayer times.

A story
The twin minarets of the Jameh Mosque, at 48 metres each, remained the tallest in Iran for several centuries. The portal they frame — a soaring iwan clad in faience tilework in deep blue and turquoise — was commissioned in the 14th century and is still considered one of the finest examples of Timurid decorative arts anywhere.
