Bab al-Wastani

Surviving Abbasid-era city gate and defensive tower from Baghdad's medieval walls.

Bab al-Wastani is one of the rare visible fragments of medieval Baghdad, a brick gate and tower from the old city defenses. In a city where many historic layers have been rebuilt over or damaged, the structure gives a tangible sense of Abbasid and later urban Baghdad.

The appeal is architectural and historical rather than scenic: look for the mass of the brickwork, the defensive form, and the way the gate now sits inside the modern city. It is worth seeking out if you are building an itinerary around Baghdad's surviving heritage sites.
