Umm al-Qura Mosque is one of Baghdad's more unusual modern religious buildings. It was built after the 1991 Gulf War, and its minarets were designed with deliberately martial forms, often compared to gun barrels and missiles.
That symbolism makes the mosque a striking piece of recent Iraqi history as much as a place of worship. It is outside the core historic circuit, but architecture-minded visitors will find it memorable.
