North Gate War Cemetery is a Commonwealth war cemetery in the Waziriyah area of Baghdad, with graves and memorials connected to the First World War Mesopotamian campaign and later Commonwealth casualties. It is a sombre, specialist stop rather than a casual sightseeing place, but it adds a different layer to a city whose modern history is usually discussed in much broader strokes.
The cemetery was begun after the British capture of Baghdad in 1917 and later received graves moved from other battlefields and burial grounds across Iraq and Anatolia. Access and local conditions should be checked carefully before attempting a visit; for many travellers, the value is in understanding that Baghdad was also a major theatre of imperial and wartime history long before the conflicts of recent decades.
