A miniature subway that climbs the slope of Mount Carmel from Paris Square in the lower city to Gan HaEm at the top, with four stops in between. The trains run on a funicular system — cabins on a steep incline, pulled by a cable — and the carriages tilt sideways to match the gradient.
The Carmelit is the easiest way to get from the harbour to the upper Carmel without a long bus or taxi ride uphill, and it is also a small piece of mid-century transport history. Open weekdays, Sunday through Friday afternoon; closed Saturday for Shabbat.
