A small protected area on the southern edge of Netanya that exists to preserve the Coastal Iris (Iris atropurpurea), a deep purple-black flower endemic to Israel's coastal sand dunes and now listed as endangered. The flowers bloom for only a few weeks each year, usually mid-February to mid-March.
Outside flowering season the site is undramatic — a fenced-off patch of dune scrub. During the bloom it is one of the prettiest things in the area: hundreds of these velvet-dark blooms scattered across the sand. The flower has become an unofficial symbol of Netanya and shows up in city emblems and signs.
