Berko Archaeological Park opens a window onto the older layers of Tiberias, south of the modern town centre. The remains include parts of the Roman-Byzantine city, with gates, streets, and public structures that make the lakeside resort feel much older than its hotels and promenades suggest.
The park is a good counterpoint to the hot springs and religious sites around the Sea of Galilee. It is especially worthwhile if you like urban archaeology: the ruins are fragmentary, but they help connect Tiberias to Herod Antipas, Roman Galilee, and the long life of Jewish and Byzantine settlement here.
