St. Peter's Church

St. Peter's Church stands on the promenade facing the Sea of Galilee, marking the traditional site of the home of Simon Peter, the fisherman who became the apostle. The current church is a Franciscan building constructed in the late 19th century incorporating elements of the earlier Crusader structure that stood here from the 12th century.

The church's nave is built in an unusual boat shape — a reference to Peter's life as a fisherman on this same lake. Inside, the atmosphere is cool and quiet, with painted walls and simple furnishings. The garden outside looks directly onto the water, and the combination of the Christian site and the Galilean view makes this one of the more peaceful spots in Tiberias. Mass is said in multiple languages to accommodate the mixed pilgrimage crowd.

A story
The Crusader church on this site was built in the 12th century on the traditional location of Simon Peter's house. After the Crusader period, it was converted into a mosque and later a caravanserai. Napoleon's army used it as a headquarters during the Sinai campaign in 1799, and a plaque inside commemorates the visit. The current building incorporates the remains of these earlier structures under its Franciscan reconstruction.
