Mount Arbel

Mount Arbel is the classic viewpoint over the Sea of Galilee. The cliffs rise sharply west of the lake, with views across Tiberias, the Golan Heights, and the villages strung along the water.

There are marked walking routes, including steep sections near the cliffside cave fortress. Go early, wear proper shoes, and avoid the hardest trails in heat or rain.

A story
The caves in the cliffs were used as strongholds in antiquity. Josephus describes Herod's soldiers being lowered in cages to attack rebels hiding in them, a brutal image that is hard to forget when you look over the drop.
